Spyware, Adware And Trojans - Your Uninvited And Unwelcome Guests!
How do you keep spyware out? These specialised viruses, collectively known as Malware (Malicious Software), tend to arrive unannounced – often attached to pirated software, possibly shared on peer-to-peer networks, or downloaded from an insecure site. For example, free screensavers are a classic method of distributing trojans. It's not always obvious that you've been infected. And like your in-laws, malware and adware can be very difficult to get rid of! Some of this malicious software will immediately affect your PC's performance. However, some of it is quite sophisticated and hides away so you have no idea it's there! But, make no mistake, adware and trojans will be VERY busy collecting personal and financial information about you and the sites you're visiting. Then it sneakily sends the information back to people you really don't want to share it with. Here are some immediate steps you can take if you suspect you have been invaded by spyware.

Taking Precautions With Anti-Spyware Products
Adware is at the very least annoying if it keeps opening pop-up windows everywhere or sending you off to unwanted websites which may in turn install more malware on your PC. At it's extreme these nasties can gather credit card and password details and pass them on to criminals who may steal your identity. So, what are the symptoms of malware presence? Well, sometimes there aren't any obvious symptoms which is why a good sweeper and detector such as SpyZooka , from BluePenguin Software , or PC Pitstop is so important. Both offer free scans. If your friends start getting strange spam emails supposedly from 'you', then you may have picked up some nasty adware or a root kit program which is actually hijacking the address book in your email client. A decent firewall can help prevent unauthorised access to the internet from your home computer. Some so called 'anti-spyware' is actually just another form of malware. Make sure the anti-spyware software you acquire comes from a legitimate source and is verified. Stick to the publishers you've heard of or had recommended. ALWAYS use reputable, secure sites for all your downloads and don't be tempted to follow Spam links for ridiculously cheap or free software offers. Download either directly from the software publisher's own site or from an approved reseller or distributor. If you're operating Windows XP you can download Windows Defender for free, and it is now included in Windows Vista. Make sure any malware detection or blocker software is turned on and carrying out regular scans – at least once a day.
Most antivirus software now searches for and quarantines or removes adware, trojans and rootkits. (You may have to upgrade some freeware to a pay-for version for removal tools.)
Any decent,
comprehensive security suite
will also include anti-spyware and removal tools. If you rely on the internet for your business, you should invest in a quality security suite. It will protect not only you but also your clients. Protect yourself and your reputation.
For totally free spyware removal there is a great choice of effective
free anti spyware
available. Some freeware may have limited functionality, but should still pick up the most common adware and trojans and should at least quarantine them. For business use, or if you are a heavy internet user, to effectively keep spyware out you should consider a good
pay-for anti-spyware product,
such as Spyware Doctor.
