Excellent Free Anti-Virus Software
With Free Regular Updates
If you're a light user (emails, a few hours surfing each week etc.) these free anti-virus products will probably be sufficient for your needs. You'll get the software free and free regular updates. A number of products (including some of the free offerings) now come with enhanced firewalls and anti-spyware.

It's easy to download (if you know where to look) install and use. High-speed automatic updates, unique Internet security technology, certified and awarded by all major independent antivirus certification companies.The FREE version can be hard to find. Follow the AVG link below to the 'Home Page', then choose the 'Home Security' tab.
Next click on the 'compare all products at a glance' link about half-way down the page, under the heading of 'Product Comparison'. This will take you to the Product Comparison page.
Click on 'learn more' under the AVG Free Anti-Virus column. The next page will offer you the opportunity to download AVG Free.

PC Tools Free Anti-Virus

Mac users will find PC Tools iAntiVirus, designed to protect against Mac OS X specific threats. (We can't see anything in the licence agreement that stipulates 'private' or 'home use' only. However, as you might expect, the free edition does not offer any technical support.)

Linux
avast! Linux Home Edition is an antivirus solution for the increasingly popular Linux platform. The Home Edition is offered free of charge but only for home and non-commercial use. Institutions (even non-commercial ones) are NOT licensed to use avast! Linux Home Edition.
