Hope floats and so do I!
Hi, I'm Eamonn Riley and as you may have guessed in terms of 'about us', I'm 'Us', and elsewhere 'We'. Hey, If it's good enough for The Queen of England!... Anyway, this is the page where you get to find out a bit more about me. As personal achievements go one of my most memorable was pretty small, but significant. I was 12 years-old and striving to get my Bronze Swimming Award and had to pull off a mushroom-float. The pool was cold, the swim teacher colder, and my pyjamas were light-brown, with brown piping and brown buttons. Did I mention we had to wear pyjamas? - I never really understood why. In terms of risk assessment, I doubt there was even the slimmest chance of me drowning in my bedroom in South East London - Though actually, now I come to think of it, I probably did look quite like a mushroom. I jumped in and assumed the 'float' position. In the long, long minute of staring at the bottom of the pool through steamy goggles I pondered my life so far. The only important things back then were Spiderman, Tottenham Hotspur, Lost in Space, my Johnny Seven Gun, and biscuits! They all flashed before my eyes, until I began to take in water. I don't think I actually achieved the full minute, but I did float and at assembly the following week I received a certificate for not drowning!
By now you might understandably be asking where I got my PhD in Internet Security - how long I've been working for Microsoft or MI6. Well, I ain't gonna 'bull' ya! I'm just an enthusiastic computer user with an interest in security. I got keen on the subject after someone tried to hack into my PayPal account a few years ago. PayPal, I'm pleased to say, were too sharp for them but it made life inconvenient for me for a few weeks ( to be honest I think I only had about Ł3.84 tied up in my account at the time). Shortly after, my anti-virus software intercepted a trojan and threw it into a little virtual cell. I couldn't understand why it didn't just vaporise the little monster! But there you go! Something to do with 'removal tools'. And suddenly I started to feel vulnerable. I don't like feeling that way, so I decided to get back in control and find out about firewalls and spyware and all that. As a consequence I've often found myself to be the person people turn to for advice when they're in the dark or worried about their online safety. It's me and you and my Johnny Seven Gun against the dark army of spammers and hackers. Most of what I'm telling you about on this site is just common sense, but knowing what safety measures to put in place can be a bit daunting especially if you're just getting into computing and the Internet. There's an awful lot of advice out there, much of it contradictory and sometimes downright disturbing and rather scary! It's easy to become blazé about security, but it's just as dangerous to become paranoid about it. I think it's wise to keep a sense of proportion about us. I'm not entirely without qualifications. Apart from my Bronze Swimming Award, I took Business Studies at the Dorset Institute in Bournemouth for two years before heading off to Loughborough in the mid-1980s to study for a BSc in Transport Management. After four years in the Transport Industry I chucked it all in to go to Drama School, and since 1991 I've worked as a professional actor, voiceover artist and writer as well as tinkering with computers - but don't ask me to take one apart! I'm more interested in what they can do than how they actually work. Well I think that's enough about us...erm, me! I hope you enjoy the site.
